One of the EIT’s main aims is to create an environment that allows entrepreneurship and innovation to flourish - both as a mindset and activity. In order to support this aim, the EIT organises annual awards to recognise and reward the successful start-ups, innovative projects and young entrepreneurial talent that Europe has to offer.
The objectives of the EIT Awards are to:
- Promote innovation
- Encourage entrepreneurship
- Celebrate European success
Launched in 2012, the EIT Awards highlight successful entrepreneurial start-ups that come out of the EIT’s Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs), and showcase the talent that emerges from the EIT-labelled and KIC educational programmes. For both the nominees and the winners, the awards are a great opportunity to share their ideas with the world and connect to the innovation community.
Every year, each of the KICs (currently Climate-KIC, EIT Digital, KIC InnoEnergy, EIT Health and EIT Raw Materials) selects two nominees for each award category. 2012 saw the introduction of the EIT Venture Award, which celebrates breakthrough innovations and exciting start-ups; while in 2013 the EIT added the EIT CHANGE Award to celebrate Europe’s newest generation of entrepreneurs and the ideas they are producing. In 2015, for the first time, the EIT will also be awarding an Innovators Award to KIC innovation teams that have developed in an exemplary manner an innovative product, service or process with a high potential for societal and economic impact
