KIC InnoEnergy MSc SELECT students win award in Barcelona

A team made up of 4 students of the KIC InnoEnergy´s MSc SELECT programme (Burkhard Hauck, Heny Kusumawardani, Davide Lora and Daniel Negrin), have won the best project award in Sustainable Energy of the “Emprèn UPC” contest, held on June 4th at the IT Faculty of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) in Barcelona.

The project is focused on the production of electricity out of the waste heat of car engines´ exhaust gases by using thermoacoustics technology, aimed at reducing CO2 emissions in the transportation sector.

The students developed the idea during their first academic year by working on both the technical feasibility and the business approach. As part of the “Technological Entrepreneurship: business plan development” course, coordinated by professor Frederic Horta, the students are encouraged to present their business ideas to local and international contests on innovation and entrepreneurship. This initiative aims at training students to convert ideas into business opportunities.

“Emprèn UPC” was sponsored by KIC InnoEnergy –which awarded 1500 euros to one of the projects- and had the participation of the company´s Business Creation Officer, Josep-Miquel Torregrosa, as a member of the jury and the projects selection committee. There were three winners out of the 70 submitted projects, and each one of them received a 2500 euros award.
