Transitions are fundamental changes in culture, structure, and practices in societal systems. They involve a ‘creation vs destruction’ duality that is inherent and simultaneous to the process of generation and anchoring of new, alternative practices and structures, as well as questioning, destabilizing, and breaking down existing unsustainable practices and structures.

The X-curve

The X-curve is a visual tool that underlines those transition dynamics, based on scientific insights into the way in which complex systems fundamentally change in nature. It provides a starting point to explore the transition dynamics present in each domain.

During this workshop, the fundamentals of the X-curve tool, how and when to use it and its practical application will be uncovered.

2021 Transitions Policy Lab

The European Green Deal is the EU’s strategy to move towards climate neutrality and circular economy by the transformative policy. That transformation requires the alignment of multiple stakeholders and instruments with existing regional innovation plans such as the Cohesion Policy. Policy mixes emerge with the purpose of reinforcing synergies and complementarities between EU, national and regional innovation initiatives.

The Transition Policy Lab addresses the goal of shifting practices for policymaking by removing barriers for enabling the necessary institutional change. It is aimed to build capacity to co-design and implement systemic strategies that can lead to potentially transformative policies and actions.

It consists of a series of five interrelated capacity-building activities implemented through three different formats multi-stakeholders setting, science-based training and executive programmes.
