Climate-KIC, the climate network of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, has organised this summer its first Open Innovation Slam, a Europe-wide online ideas competition for innovative products and services that contribute to energy savings in homes. More than 700 registered users participated and over 50 teams posted their ideas. During a Climate-KIC Venture Weekend from 23-25 November in Berlin the top ten teams pitched their ideas in a final round. The winning team receives a grant of € 95,000 and a seat in the Climate-KIC Incubation Programme.

1st price went to a team from Cyprus and their idea for a European database of “Energy Buildings”, displayed in the format of a map, i.e. ENERMAP . Through ENERMAP, anyone will be able to access a map, like Google Maps, that would show a coloured layer on top of the buildings based on their EPCs rating. The ENERMAP team comprises of 13 organizations/bodies from 11 countries ranging from universities to economic interest groups with the support of about 20 groups that are interested in using and promoting ENERMAP.

Alexandros Charalambides, initiator for ENERMAP: "We are honored and privileged to have received first prize in the inaugural Open Innovation Slam. The responsibility on us weighs as much as the generous award, and we vouch that we will work hard to make ENERMAP a reality that we can all be proud of. Thank you for placing your trust in us and for creating an environment of support and development."

2nd place was awarded for PULSE and a special recognition of the jury for the Hamster Wheel App. Pulse is introducing a device into the market that opens radiator valves only when needed by supplying the consumer with a package of a computer device (PulseBox), wireless radiator valve controllers and wireless motion sensors. The Hamster Wheel App is using augmented reality and smartphones to show in a visually and fun way possibilities to reduce energy and thereby strengthen awareness of consumption.

Eelco Hoogduin team member from Pulse: “A weekend full of great coaching, interaction with other teams and hard work. As a runner-up, Climate-KIC will provide us with twelve sessions of individual business coaching which will definitely contribute to the success of our venture.”
