The Climate-KIC supported start-up Coolar has recently been named a top three start-up at Handelsblatt Energy Awards

The generation of renewable energy is a central issue for Europe. It is therefore unsurprising that the European energy sector is buzzing with creativity and innovation.

The annual Handelsblatt Energy Awards offer the best projects in Germany in the field of renewable energy a platform on which to display their ideas, access a valuable network and create media interest around their products. There are five categories: Start-up, Industry, Smart Home, Public utilities and Mobility.

This year, Coolar won a coveted top-three place in the Start-up category.

Based in Berlin, Coolar is developing an innovative cooling system powered by solar heat rather than electricity. Its innovative power source provides a sustainable and effective alternative to conventional cooling methods, providing developing regions that have unstable power supplies with access to medical refrigerators. This could vastly improve vaccination deliveries, up to 75% of which are damaged by improper cooling.

The idea for Coolar was originally developed at the Climate-KIC summer school in 2012. Coolar then participated in Climate KIC’s Greenhouse Pre-incubation programme, which helps start-ups take their first steps towards success. In 2015, Coolar was accepted into the Climate-KIC accelerator programme, benefiting from Climate-KIC Germany’s vast network of other founders, business angels, venture capital investors, as well as start-up coaches and advisors.

Coolar was co-founded in 2014 by Arno Zimmerman, a nominee at the EIT Awards in 2015 and who was recently featured by Forbes in their 30 under 30 list of most promising young entrepreneurs. Earlier this year, Coolar’s other co-founder, Julia Römer, was named the winner of ‘The venture Germany’ competition and was offered a chance to win USD 1 million at the global finals. After a tough competition, Julia was awarded 3rd place.
