European Commission Vice-President Jyrki Katainen visits EIT Digital Silicon Valley hub and discusses Europe’s AI Strategy

EIT Digital welcomed Jyrki Katainen, Vice-President of the European Commission, responsible for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness in their Silicon Valley Hub

This meeting further developed interactions between Europe and US technology and innovation scenes, including the local European footprint and exchange on key topics such as artificial intelligence, future of work, regulations and digital single market.

The main objective for Vice-President Katainen was to obtain input for policy making in the context of Europe’s AI strategy. During the meeting with experts and EU stakeholders, he expressed interest to understand how more European investment into AI can be stimulated and what the drivers for this could be. He also wanted to know how regulators can help to stimulate growth and innovation in this area: public data made available and utilized more for AI applications, development of new skills for AI through education, sensible regulation coming from Europe and transparency.

The panel concluded that all sectors of activity will be affected in some form. Every company needs a strong AI strategy and needs to integrate AI in some form.

Following European Commission Vice-President Andrus Ansip’s visit on 18 April to Silicon Valley, the visit of Jyrki Katainen at the end of April demonstrates how the European Commission acknowledges the importance of the EIT Digital's role to promote Europe's innovations and achievements in the US.
