With more than 8000 decision-makers of the health economy and health policy representatives, the Capital Congress Medicine & Health 2016 (Hauptstadtkongress Medizin und Gesundheit) took place on 8-10 June 2016 in Berlin to discuss the future of health economies. More than 600 key health representatives spoke in around 200 individual sessions and events on specific topics in the area of healthcare. Many high-level representatives from the German national and regional governments, key researchers and scientists and many other leaders from all healthcare industry sectors joined this comprehensive event.

This year, the key topic of the Congress was “innovations”. Key representatives from hospitals, insurances, the pharma industry and other health-related stakeholders discussed the need to develop more innovative healthcare solutions quickly in view of the socio-economic challenges at national and European level. Scientific researchers and business representatives presented their findings to provide new hope for citizens’ health. One highlight of the event was the huge exhibition area, where several health-related organisations presented their work and offered a varied networking space which was complemented by short specific speeches that took place in certain exhibition areas.

Together with AbbVie and Siemens Healthineers, EIT Health was represented at the Capital Congress at the exhibition stands of both companies and could further explain the aims of the EU consortium and specific collaboration opportunities. Dr. Armin Pscherer, CEO of the German EIT Health GmbH, also got the opportunity to speak at the “Speakers Corner” of Siemens Healthineers and Sanofi to showcase achievements and involvement opportunities of EIT Health at German and European level. Other speakers from the EIT Health Community at the Capital Congress included for example Dr. Stefan Simianer from AbbVie, Alexander Tietz from the RWTH Aachen and Jörg Trinkwalter from Medical Valley.

During a session on biomedical ageing research on 9 June 2016, Dr. Stefan Simianer, General Manager Research & Development of AbbVie Germany, stressed the importance of collaboration in order to find new therapeutic health solutions for the future. He explained AbbVie’s involvement in EIT Health and the opportunities that this innovative EU consortium can offer. The AbbVie partnership with Calico, a Google company, is an excellent example of strategic collaboration in order to find innovative therapies for age-related diseases together by bundling different expertise and competencies.

Topics of other sessions included for example e-health, mental health, healthcare recruitment, healthy ageing, oncology, preventive measures for longer health, dementia, digitalization of health systems and other interesting areas. The second German CLC Partner Assembly in 2016 took place on 9 June in Berlin in parallel to the Capital Congress, as several partners joined both events. Altogether, the Capital Congress was an excellent setting to discuss new innovations, new investment and collaboration opportunities and different pathways to develop relevant solutions that can make a difference for citizens and improve healthcare systems in the long term.
