EIT and KEAN present the results of digital coding for girls workshop
EITThis October, the EIT and KEAN met in Athens to present the results of their pilot workshops.
In cooperation with KEAN, a local Greek NGO, which promotes new technologies and the social awareness of youth, the EIT held a number of code-learning (programming) workshops for female students aged 12-18 over the summer of 2017.
On Sunday 8 October the EIT and KEAN hosted an event at BCA College in Athens to present the results of their first digital coding workshops.
Laurent Roux, the EIT's Entrepreneurship Officer and Women Entrepreneurship and Leadership lead, presented some of the EIT's other projects that support Women Leadership and Entrepreneurship activities. These include inspirational workshops in 6 EIT RIS countries with local successful female entrepreneurs and leaders talking to local 12-18 years old female students, digital coding workshops and competitions for 12-18 years old female students, and participation at European level events on the topic and the sharing of success stories and best practices online with others through various platforms of the EU Commission. In follow up to the event Laurent invite other partners to take part in future workshops, in order to scale them up and increase outreach.
The event in Athens was also attended by investors, media and officials of Greek and EU Institutions who all expressed their willingness to support and contribute to the progression of the workshops in other areas of Greece and in neighbouring countries. Mr. Nikos Mpampalos Mayor of Neon Iraklion, one of the five cities that hosted the workshops, pointed out that because of the positive impact and the enthusiasm of the young students that joined the courses, the City Council will support a new series of digital coding workshops.
The representative of the General Secretary of the Ministry of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Information, Mrs Areti Gourgouli welcomed the Girls Coding project as one of those important efforts that can strengthen the youth of Greece.
Towards the end of the event, The young students who participated in the workshop took the floor and shared their experience with the audience, describing what inspired them during the workshops and how they were positively affected by this new knowledge and the contribution of their coding-teacher Mrs Vasso Bellia.
The event was finally closed by an inspiring speech from Dimitris Terzopoulos, a young expert from Google, who partnered with the EIT and KEAN in the organisation of the workshop.
